WOLF SUSHCHITZKY PHOTOGRAPHY PRIZE

Major exhibition of work from FARMED and DRAINED

curated by Vanessa Fewster and Katy Barron

ACF London | 28 Rutland Gate | Knightsbridge | SW7 1PQ

Hart’s empty agricultural landscapes are a revelation – his hand-made prints record subtle visual shifts in the vast farming landscapes of the Lincolnshire Fens, recording a part of England that is sparsely populated and rarely visited. There is a surprising majesty to the endless empty fields, framed by power lines and smothered in damp fog, and a specificity to each image. Hart’s practice is not about ‘being in the right place at the right time’ but rather the result of scrutiny and dedication over many years.
— Katy Barron

WOLF SUSCHITSKY PHOTOGRAPHY PRIZE

INAUGURAL PRIZE AND RESIDENCY

The Austrian Cultural Forum London initiated this new photography prize in 2018,

two years following the death of Wolf Suschitzky.

Supported by The Austrian Federal Chancellery the prize celebrates

the life and work of the late émigré photographer

and reflects the dual nature of Suschitzky’s identity

by awarding photographers from both the UK and Austria.

Paul Hart’s careful aesthetic sensitivity and unconventional approach to landscape photography show the depth and significance in the everyday fabric of his native landscape. There is a dissonance between the contemporary subject and the traditional technique. Like Suschitzky, he treats the landscape with the same respect, care and attention to detail without prejudging it.
— Austrian Cultural Forum, London

FARMED (Dewi Lewis 2018) Second Edition | Essay : Collier Brown

Paul Hart is a photographer interested in the slow harvesting of hidden truth from the ordinary places that most of us pass by. He works in an unfashionable idiom with slow cumbrous equipment (not just old-fashioned analogue photography, but medium format analogue photography, slower still) in an unfashionable place. He seeks to find the bits of the land that speak their stories, and to transmit their importance in views which, typically, the absolute lack of melodrama demands slow looking and brings slow revelation. Hart’s placid, formally peaceful landscape is pregnant with stories that lurk in the mud or the mist. His magic lies in soliciting from his viewers the same half historical, half romantic reaction to ploughed fields and straight drainage ditches as he gets from them himself.
— Francis Hodgson

POETRY OF PLACE | PAUL HART'S LANDSCAPES

18 January - 18 February 2018

Paul Hart has spent over a decade exploring human relationships with the land through photographs devoid of people.

His recent exhibition at The Photographers' Gallery (London) brought together his three related series to date;

DRAINED [2016-17] FARMED [2009-15] and TRUNCATED [2005-8]

each one concentrating on a precise geographical region photographed intensively over a number of years.

FARMED REVIEWED IN LENSWORK

Book review and 6 page feature in LensWork No. 128 February 2017

Book review and 6 page feature in LensWork No. 128 February 2017

"We first published Paul Hart's work in LensWork Extended 85 from his book and project titled Truncated. This new book continues his exploration of the landscape, this time a completely different one. Turning his attention to landscapes under cultivation, he creates aesthetically pleasing and visually rewarding images in a quiet classic style. His images remind one of those great FSA photographers of the 1930s." Brooks Jensen
