Hart’s seminal series TRUNCATED (2005-08) is an intensive portrayal of an ageing pine forest plantation in Derbyshire (England) made on large and medium format film cameras. The series was published in 2009 by Dewi Lewis with an essay by Gerry Badger ; now long out of print rare copies of the publication are highly sought. Images from TRUNCATED have been featured in numerous publications including Into the Woods, Martin Barnes (Thames & Hudson/V&A), Looking at Trees, Sophie Howarth (Hoxton Mini Press) and Looking at Images (Lenswork Publishing).
TRUNCATED continues to receive international attention and is regularly exhibited in commercial galleries and photography festivals. Notable exhibitions include : Truncated (The Harley Foundation, 2024), Poetry of Place (The Photographers’ Gallery, 2019) and The 245th Royal Academy Summer Exhibition (Main Galleries Burlington House, 2013).
In 2016 TRUNCATED received the People’s Choice Award at the Prix de la Photographie (Paris, France).
“Hart’s rich, dark prints capture the Stygian gloom of the dense pine forest perfectly, where trees are so close together that little light reaches their inner depth”
